Monday’s Middletown region sports roundup

HIGGANUM >> Junior pitcher Jack DiMatteo struck out 10 over six innings to lead Haddam-Killingworth to a 10-0 Shoreline Conference victory over Coginchaug on Monday.

It was the Cougars (15-2) fifth straight win.

Ben Alonzo, Ty Schuler, Zach O’Toole and Kyle Crandall had two hits apiece for H-K (15-2), which built a 6-0 lead in the second inning.

The Blue Devils fell to 7-7.

Baseball

Portland 11, Westbrook 2 >> Austin White had two hits, including a double and four RBIs, and winning pitcher Matt Wyslick struck out 10 over five innings to lift the Highlanders. Jordan Vogt’s bases loaded double fueled a five-run fourth inning and propelled the Highlanders (7-6) to a 6-2 lead. Alex Hartzell had two RBIs for the host Knights (5-9).

Old Saybrook 1, East Hampton 0 >> Ryan Dubord tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead the visiting Rams (4-11). The only run came in the sixth when Haydon Lockart (2-for-3) led off with a single, advanced to third on a single by Justin Phillips, then scored on an infield ground out.
Chad Stanton scattered five hits and struck out seven, while Randy Michaud had the only hit for the Bellringers (9-6).

Hamden 4, Xavier 3 >> At Palmer Field, Mike Ferrett earned the pitching win and Andrew Kirshenbaum had a double in the Green Dragons (12-2) SCC Quinnipiac Division clinching win on Monday. The Falcons dropped to 4-8.

Wilcox Tech 17, Vinal Tech 1 >> At Middletown, senior Angelo Calandra earned the pitching win for the Indians (12-2). The Hawks fell to 4-9.

North Branford 2, Cromwell 0 >> At Monnes Field, Chad Deming struck out seven over six innings and Matt Chamberlain had two RBIs to lift the T-birds (8-5). Luke Matchett had two hits for the host Panthers (10-5).

Hyde/Hillhouse 1, Hale-Ray 0 >> At Moodus, John Williamson fired a one-hitter to lead Hyde (1-11) to its first win. The Noises fell to 1-12.

Softball

Portland 13, Old Lyme 1 (5) >> Isabelle Guilmette earned the pitching win and Ruth Kelley went 2-for-3 with a triple for the host Highlanders (2-9). Molly Biega had a pair of singles for the Wildcats (0-12).

Cheshire 5, Mercy 2 >> At Middletown, junior Abigail Abramson had 12 strikeouts and Samantha Simione went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the unbeaten Rams (14-0). Tiffany Mangiameli and Blake Braman had two hits apiece for the Tigers (8-6).

Morgan 10 Cromwell 0 >> At Clinton, senior Emily Popp scattered seven hits for the Huskies (7-3), who scored six runs in the sixth inning. Kate Pietraszek had three hits and Taylor Wood added two hits for the Panthers (8-7).

Hale-Ray 26, Old Saybrook 2 (5) >> Skyler Rapuano had three hits and three RBIs, and Nicole Dombroski went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the visiting Noises (11-5). Maeve Foley had a hit and an RBI for the Rams (2-10).

Maloney 8, Middletown 3 >> At Meriden, winning pitcher Paige Uliase-Mickens struck out 10 and also blasted a two-run homer in the Spartans’ CCC home win on Monday. Sam Pizzonia and Briana DiMartino each hit a double for the Blue Dragons (8-5). Maloney improved to 11-1.

Boys Tennis

Middletown 7, New Britain 0 >> At Wesleyan, Peter Flynn, Payton White, Zach Fitzner, and Harish Patel rolled to straight set singles wins to lead the Blue Dragons to their first win of the season. Joel Morales and Dylan Myers, Evan Augeri and Lawrecne Wu, and Scott Santos and Sofian Albayati swept the doubles matches for Middletown (1-6). New Britain is 4-5.

Portland 3, Haddam-Killingworth 1 >> Brandon Szabo and Danny Norton took the 1-2 singles matches to lead the Highlanders. Ben Blair captured third singles for the Cougars.

Girls Tennis

Mercy 7, Career/Hillhouse 0 >> Molly Garcia, Juliette Piazza, Casey Rosa-Breton, and Gabi Morello earned straight set singles wins for the Tigers (8-7).

Valley Regional 7, Cromwell 0 >> At Deep River, Hannah Halsey, Maggie Klin, Callie Riggio, and Emma Hunt notched straight set singles wins to lead the Warriors to their 10th straight win. Maddy Ball and Ellie Flynn took first doubles for Valley (12-1). The Panthers dropped to 8-3.

Boys Golf

Hand 166, Morgan 171, Haddam-Killingworth 191, Fitch 225 >> At Clinton Country Club, Jack Oliver fired a 40 to lead Hand in a non-league match on Monday. Morgan’s Kevin Daley shot a 37 to earn medalist honors. Alex Segaline shot a 40 for H-K, while Dawson Gibson led Fitch with a 51.

Valley Regional 216, East Hampton 221 >> At Black Birch Country Club, the Bellringers’ Alex Basil fired a 45 to earn medalist honors.

Coginchuag 174, North Branford 225 >> The Blue Devils were led by medalist Jack French, who fired a 42. Also scoring for Coginchaug were Saige Avery (43), Tyler Woodward (44), and Kyle Fontaine (45). Jimmy Augur shot a 47 to lead the T-birds.

Portland 167, Hale-Ray (no score) >> At Portland Golf Course, medalist Nick Piersall fired a 36 for the Highlanders (11-1). Brian Rasimus shot a 47 to lead the Noises (1-7) three-man team.

Girls Golf

Mercy 182, Lauralton Hall 204 >> At Racebrook, medalist Praewa Treekul shot a 40, while Meghan Deville fired a 46 to lead the Tigers (9-1). Liz Garfield shot a 41 for the Crusaders.

Ultimate Frisbee

Xavier 15, Avon 6 >> At Thompson Brook School, Gunnar Jackson had six points and Zach Braun added three points and five blocked passes to lift the Falcons on Monday. Tom Dobensky and Nick Rotatori each had three assists for Xavier (15-3). Avon dropped to 7-6.
