O’Brien Tech 6, Bassick 5 >> The game reportedly ended on a triple play with the bases loaded to give O’Brien Tech the CSC win at Ansonia.
According to O’Brien Tech coach Nick Aprea, Bassick had the bases loaded with none out in the top of the seventh inning when a short fly ball was caught by center fielder Sam Cherney for the first out. Both runners had taken off thinking they would score. Cherney threw to second baseman Mike Macary for the second out, then threw to third baseman Tucker Reza for the unique triple play.
“When the ball left the bat, I started pulling out the lineup card to see who we had up in the bottom of the seventh,” Aprea said. “Once (Cherney) made the catch, the play seemed to be in slow motion. I was actually more concerned yelling ‘3’ to Macary may cause a rushed throw and I would be the goat for wanting more than just a double play. But Macary executed. … It was great for this group of kids to accomplish something at that exact time of the game with everything riding on it. It’s like a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
