Branford coach Ed Bethke is going back to college.

The coach resigned from Branford Thursday and Monday will officially be named the assistant coach/pitching coach at Southern Connecticut State University. He pitched at Southern from 2007-10 and won 22 games on the mound.

“The next step in my career was always to move on and coach college and go back to Southern,” he said. “It was one of those things where you can’t pass up the opportunity.”

Bethke took the Hornets job in 2013, taking over for George Dummar who was battling brain cancer. Dummar died on Sept. 28, 2014, after fighting the disease at age 54. Bethke went onto go 22-39 as head coach at Branford. He said the school and athletic department was always supportive.

“I let them know what was going on and if I was offered I was going to accept,” he said. “They had nothing but kind things to say.”

Bethke still holds the school-record for career wins, amassing 22 on the mound over his four-year career at Branford.
