UNCASVILLE >> The Portland golf team edged Killingly, 336-337, to capture the Wildcat Invitational on Monday at the Mohegan Sun Country Club. Twenty schools competed in the annual event, which is hosted by Norwich Free Academy.
Highlanders junior Nick Piersall was the tournament runner-up. Piersall fired a 77 to finish one-stroke behind medalist Drew Aitken (Killingly), who shot a 76.
Portland junior Jimmy Kelley tied for third with a 78. Senior Jon Twitchell placed sixth with an 81, while sophomore Jon Lucas completed the Highlanders scoring with a round of 100.
Xavier and Berlin tied for third, each shooting 342. The Falcons were led by Joe Ensign 83, Mitch Nappi 84, Connor Forbes 87, and Kevin Lynch 88.
East Hampton 228, Hale-Ray 257 >> At Fox Hopyard, senior Alex Basil fired a 42 to earn medalist honors for the Bellringers.
Baseball
East Hampton 9, Hale-Ray 2 >> Senior Chad Stanton tossed a complete game three-hitter with nine strikeouts and also had two hits and an RBI to propel the host Bellringers on Monday.
Luke Johnson had three hits for East Hampton (12-6).
Bryan Ziobron, Colin O’Brien, and Carson Hemphill each had a hit for the Noises (1-16).
Vinal Tech 18, Capital Prep 4 >> At Hartford, senior Mike Gioella hit a home run and Devin Skoglund earned the pitching win to lift the Hawks (5-12).
The Trailblazers fell to 1-15.
North Branford 6, Haddam-Killingworth 1 >> Senior Chad Demming scattered five hits while striking out eight in a complete game effort to lift the host T-birds.
Matt Chamberlain hit a double and a triple for North Branford (11-6).
Jon Grasso had two hits for the Cougars (15-4).
Softball
Coginchaug 4, Woodland 3 >> At Durham, senior Gabby Diaz scattered seven hits with eight strikeouts to earn the pitching win and also went 3-for-3 with an RBI to propel the Blue Devils to a non-league win on Monday.
Destiny Helmedach had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Coginchaug (14-2).
Cameron Caswell and Maddie Hupprich each had two hits for the Hawks (9-9).
Valley Regional 17, East Hampton 5 (5) >> At Deep River, senior Katie Amara doubled, tripled and had two RBIs to pace the Warriors on Monday.
Julia Jenkins and Kaleigh Caulfield each had two hits and an RBI for Valley (5-9).
Alyssa Marchi and Sarah Vickery had two hits apiece for the Bellringers (5-12).
Capital Prep 24, Vinal Tech 7 >> At Middletown, sophomore Macey Vidal got the pitching win for the Trailblazers (14-4).
The Hawks fell to 3-12.
Portland 6, Cromwell 2 >> Joy Vincenzo and Alicia Archuletta each had two hits, while Emma Fantoli had a key bases loaded single in the Highlanders five-run sixth inning to lead Portland (5-10) on Monday night at Nolan Field.
The Panthers fell to 8-9.
Girls Lacrosse
North Haven 15, Mercy 11 >> At Middletown, freshman Annie Uyeki tallied six goals and Mandy Brock added three goals to lead the Indians (10-3).
Jordyn Masse and Meg McClellan notched three goals apiece for the host Tigers (6-9).
Boys Tennis
Branford 5, Xavier 2 >> At Branford, Rich Ciamarra took first singles and Mike Higgins captured fourth singles for the Falcons (8-7).
Miles Conlin and Charles Hall won at No. 1 doubles to lead the Hornets (10-4).
