BURLINGTON >> Lewis Mills’ softball team fought off the rain and Shepaug with a big third inning in a 9-5 win at Lewis Mills High School Friday afternoon.
In a battle of Spartans, Shepaug’s Spartans put up the game’s first run in the top of the third.
The Mills Spartans came back with six.
Amber Madore had a two-run triple; Val Neuhausser was 2-for-2, with 2 doubles and 3 RBI; Chloe Brzoska had an RBI and a run.
Mills scored 2 more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Shepaug scored again in the fourth inning, then made a 3-run push in the top of the seventh.
Giana Johnson had a triple and a run; Annie Rosa was 2-for-3; Paige Johnson was 2-for-3 with a run.
Mills, 8-9, qualified for the state tournament with the win.
Shepaug, 7-8, is just one win away.

Sacred Heart 182, Torrington 190 >> Torrington’s Adam LaMothe shot a medalist 41 in the rain at East Mountain, but Nick Paniati’s 48 was the only other Red Raider score under 50.
The Hearts had four of them: Fran Fahy’s 42; Anthony Corbo, 44; John Keane, 47; James Gruszka, 49.
Boys Lacrosse
St. Paul Catholic 15, Wamogo 2 >> Max Loomis and Ben Porter scored for the Warriors. Noah Sessions had 15 saves.

Wolcott Tech 21, O’Brien Tech 4 >> In the kind of five-inning mercy-rule game the Wildcats (11-6) have grown used to, Morgan Rubino (2 hits, 2 RBI, 3 runs); Alicia Winn (2 hits, double, 4 runs); Madison Rubino (2 hits, double, RBI, run); and Katelyn Benedict (2 RBI, 2 runs) led the charge.
Nadia Jackson (RBI double, 2 runs) and Andrea Piccinillo (2 hits, RBI) stood out for O’Brien Tech (3-10).
Northwestern 18, Housatonic 2 >> The Highlanders led 9-1 after the first inning at Northwestern, then coasted through a mercy-rule five innings. Kate Matava struck out 9 Mountaineers in a one-hitter and went 3-for-3 at bat with 2 doubles. Sydney Sanden had a 2-run homer; Sydney Shaffer was 2-for-2; Marissa Swartley and Katie Wald had doubles.
Wamogo 4, Waterbury Career Academy 0 >> Wamogo’s Cyrena Zemaitis (16 strikeouts) threw a perfect game in the shutout at Wamogo High School. Aubrey Robot (2-for-3, double, RBI) and Savannah Wheeler (2 RBI) led the offense.
Wamogo is 14-2; WCA is 11-3.
Golf
Nonnewaug 169, Terryville 196, Shepaug 210 >> Nonnewaug’s Bret Stokes led the parade at Pequabuck Golf Course with a 41. Jay Herman (42); Anthony Eanniello (43); and Jason Porcelli (43) were right behind.
Mike Hills (45) and Robbie Lamarre (49) stayed under 50 for the Kangaroos.
The Chiefs are 9-3 in the Berkshire League; Terryville is 6-6; Shepaug is 1-10.
Wolcott Tech 192, Platt Tech 215 >> The Wildcats (13-0) clinched the CSC’s West Division with a win at Torrington Country Club. Hunter Goslee was medalist with a 44; Jacob Gasper had 47; Carter Wheeler, 48.
Matt Allan led Platte Tech (7-2) with a 49.
Wolcott Tech plays for the league championship in two weeks.
Boys Tennis
Torrington 6, Woodland 3; Torrington 8, Woodland 1 >> In a double header at Woodland, Torrington’s Billy Weber, Kevin Dixon and Will Elmendorf won twice in singles. Scott Dixon and Woodland’s Mike Roulenaitus split at No. 1. Naseem Thompson won one singles match; Sean Hartwell won the other in Red Raider victories at No. 6 singles.
Mike Toulenatus/Josh Powanda made it close at No. 1 doubles in the first match. Weber/Elmendorf; and Kevin Dixon/Thompson carried it home at No. 2 and No. 3.
Kevin Dixon and Thompson teamed up again in the second match; Luke Wassik/Hartwell; and Richard Zheng/Kyle White completed a doubles sweep.
The Red Raiders completed the regular season 13-2; Woodland finished 6-10.
Lewis Mills 5, Wamogo 0 >> Jacob Honig, Bo Omuraliev, Jorge Mataix, Shawn Magill/Honig; and Jon Groleau/Chris Soliani shut out the Warriors.

Litchfield 5, Thomaston 0 >> Charlie Shanks, Jan Rizenhoff, Tristan Roveto, Ryan Garden/Spencer Sivilla; and Yovie Rivera/Stephan Papandrea swept the Bears.
Litchfield is 8-4; Thomaston is 2-10.
Girls Tennis
Litchfield 6, Lewis Mills 1 >> Lexi Hoigmann, Tiffany D’Andrea, Sophie MacDonald, Elena Keddendy/Margaret Hill; Claire Chapman/Corine Casal; and Aaliyah Vescera/Maggie Brady continued the Cowgirls’ domination (12-0) in the Berkshire League.
Kayleigh Watson won No. 4 singles for the Spartans (6-3).
Torrington 5, Holy Cross 2 >> Holy Cross’s Elena Tormo and Therese Cayab Yab split the singles matches with Torrington’s Sima El-Ayoub and Cara McCarthy.
Then the Red Raiders swept the doubles. Andrea Sananikone/Sarah Gardella; Shae Eucalitto/Izzie Weber; and Christina Prinssen/Jennifer Zheng all won for Torrington.
Northwestern 7, Gilbert 0 >> Christina Kovacs, Maggie Dougan, Jenny Jarvis, Maria Hester, Cecilia Petricone/Mirando Tranquillo; Sarah Allyn/Nicole Hartwell; and Hannah Mulhair/Serena Johnstone all won at home.
Shepaug 5, Nonnewaug 2 >> The Spartans (12-1) swept the singles matches at Shepaug. Nonnewaug (8-4) took two of the three doubles matches. Caroline Kelly, Haley Pesce, Emma Kassis, Kate Klein, Margaret Wold/Abby Gorra were Shepaug’s winners.
Skylar Delp/Jen Charette and Maureen McCarthy/Natalie DiMichelle won for the Chiefs.
Boys Volleyball
Wolcott Tech 3, Simsbury 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21) >> Dan Juliano (12 kills, 13 assists, 11 digs, 2 aces); Dave Colombie (10 kills, 3 blocks); and Chris Steward (4 kills, 7 digs) led the Wildcats (6-8) at home.
Fred Calkins had 9 kills, 12 digs and 6 aces for the Trojans (4-12).
Lewis Mills 3, Amity 0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-21) >> A consistent offense worked for the Spartans (9-3) behind Anthony Licata (14 kills); Ben Lewis (12 kills, 9 digs) and Kevin Dryzwick (4 kills, 12 digs). Lorenze Gunzl served up 31 assists, along with 5 kills, 6 digs, a block and an ace.
Ari Kaufman-Frankel (8 kills, 6 assists) and Conor Leary-Watson (8 kills, 3 blocks) led Amity’s Spartans (2-14).
Baseball
Wolcott Tech 15, Waterbury Career Academy 1 >> Jimmy Lamanna (3 hits, triple, 4 runs); Levi Marsh (3 hits, 2 runs); and Riley Shreders (3 hits) blasted WCA on offense.
Wildcat freshman Ryan Marconi had 8 strikeouts in the last three innings.
Tech’s record rises to 11-7.
