Baseball: Amity’s Coppola among inductees into Southern CT Diamond Club Hall of Fame

The Southern Connecticut Diamond Club, Inc. will hold its annual hall of fame induction dinner to honor those who have contributed to baseball in the area.

It will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Monticello’s Restaurant in Meriden. Hors d’oeuvres will be at 5:30 p.m. Dinner follows promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Those being inducted include Sal Coppola, varsity baseball coach at Amity; Ed Duel (posthumously), former Hamden High standout; Mike Giordano, former starter for Hamden and the University of New Haven and drafted by the Minnesota Twins; Frank Kafka, former softball coach at Quinnipiac University; and Mike Vacca, varsity coach at Ansonia.

Ralph Bernardini (posthumously) will receive the Andrew Gassira Umpire Award. Rose V. Mentone, will receive the Tony Mentone Memorial Distinguished Service Award. The 1954 Hamden Medics will receive the Team of the Past Award.

Anyone needing tickets can contact Rose Mentone at 541 Hill St., Hamden on or before Oct. 8 at rmentone@comcast.net or go to southernctdiamond club.org. Tickets are $55 per person and include a full-course surf and turf dinner or vegetarian, if preferred.
